About
I’m a consultant and software engineer, based in Sydney Australia. For most of this decade I’ve been working with Java at the enterprise level, chiefly in the financial services industry. I’ve been leading development teams for several years, delivering some large projects in that time. I also have significant professional experience in Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
My technical interests include design and architecture, development processes and web services. Since 2006 I’ve been very interested in what dynamic languages have to offer, and have been investing a significant amount of time in Ruby in particular. I believe it has got the right mix of technical strength, marketing, and buzz to succeed, even at an enterprise level.
I’m constantly trying to get better at what I do, and I see writing and communication as one of the key activities in software development. I created this weblog to force me to improve in this area. I’m also halfway through a Masters of Business and Technology at the University of New South Wales (UNSW).
These posts fill in a little more about my professional life (and how I got here):
Outside of work, my interests include basketball, reading (voraciously), design and architecture (not the software variety,) music and rugby.
In 2006 and early 2007, I built Trender Bender, a social networking site for street fashion, written in Ruby on Rails. It could do with some love (refactoring to latest Rails practices and graphic design makeover), but still does a decent amount of traffic.
